Thing 7: Podcasting

Regarding Thing 7 of the 10 Things.

I’ve subscribed to a few podcasts before, but going through this exercise gave me a good excuse to really explore what’s out there in the podcasting world. I can easily see how people would lose track of time with this stuff. That’s a good thing if you’re a library trying to figure out ways to connect with your community! The beauty of podcasting and vodcasting is that you don’t need professional level material to make that connection with your audience. In fact, check this little music video (not sure if I feel comfortable calling it that!) from the Library of the Year. Talk about not being afraid to show the human face of libraries and librarians! Seriously, they do an incredible job with their podcast collection, which they call “Programs to Go.”

I also really enjoyed the book reviews by teens (though there are only a few) on the Thomas Ford Memorial Library’s website. It would be great to get our teens involved with something like this where they review books, movies, music, manga, and more. And not just with the teens, but with adults, staff, children…basically anyone who will get in front of a microphone or camera.

My favorite individual podcast, or actually vodcast, is the Wii Safety 101 (as illustrated by G.I. Joes) brought to us by the podcasting gurus of OCLS.

I hope we do podcasting at Skokie PL soon. It looks too easy, fun, and valuable to pass up or put on the back burner.
