It’s official! I’ve accepted a new job at Arlington Heights Memorial Library. I’ll be their new Information Services Manager starting the first week of July. To be honest, it’s going to be very tough leaving Skokie because the past three years have been very good to me professionally. I’ve had a chance to work with some incredibly talented people and I’ve loved the work, but I just felt that this new opportunity at AHML was just too good to pass up. AHML has a great reputation and has been an innovator in many areas, so I think it’ll be a great fit for me. And who knows, maybe I’ll get a second crack at building a digital media lab! It never hurts to think big, right?!

Started Friday with a great session on being a good boss. Here are my notes:

Be a Good Boss
Cathy Hakala-Ausperk from Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library
Kimberly Bolan Cullin from Kimberly Bolan & Associates

Presentation slides

you’ll never be a truly great library director unless you know how to fix a toilet

educate yourself and set a good example

three kinds of bosses: newbie, know but don’t “have” time (most bosses), don’t know what they don’t know (think they know it all)

who’s the best boss you’ve ever had?

good bosses make you feel like they believe in you

being a boss touches every single corner of your library

you have to learn a lot of things, but the thing that matters the most is how you treat other people

bosses set the tone of the workplace and touch the lives of ppl so that they can be everything they can be

good bosses know that they have a lot to offer and a lot to learn

what’s needed to achieve and maintain greatness? three things…

commitment – need to have the right attitude, need the commitment to become a great boss.

time (1 hour a week) – how to carve out 1 hour per week: arrest the time thieves, check email only twice a day, stop polishing the pearl (not everything needs to be perfect), master the art of nonfinishing (drop the stuff that’s not worth the time, move onto to stuff that’s more productive), skip a lunch…it’s your career!

other professionals continue training, so should librarians! we need to invest in our own development on a personal level

a plan – a lot of workbooks out there that will help you put together a plan to become a good boss (cathy has a workbook coming out in summer called “be a good boss”).

write your own workbook – not that difficult to do. perform a SWOT analysis on your own leadership and design a plan based on those

mentoring is key, learning from others and sharing your wisdom and experience with others

mentoring can be spontaneous, not necessarily a formal thing

resources: http://www.workforce.com and http://blogs.hbr.org and http://feeds.harvardbusiness.org/harvardbusiness

audience comments and questions:

stop being a know-it-all and respect where people are at and what they want for their own work and career

admit your mistakes, just be honest, shows strength and gains respect from staff

getting out into your community to the point where your staff don’t know where you are and you lose touch with them, not a good thing!

sign that things are going well is when there is initiative and ppl are coming forward with new ideas

importance of setting clear expectations and communicating them well

if you’re going to say something that’s kind of difficult, start by saying, “i have to say something that’s kind of difficult…”

how do you discipline without creating ill feelings? set clear expectations so criticism doesn’t come as a surprise. start by saying, “look, my job is to help you succeed. we have a problem…so how can we figure out how to improve things and help you succeed?” let them contribute to the solution. let hem know you’re on their side.

how do you help your boss become a better boss if you have a bad boss? honest communication. get a new job if it doesn’t get better. don’t stay in a workplace that makes your life miserable and doesn’t allow you to be productive and grow.

Had our first TechMunchies event today. TechMunchies is a new staff training series at my library to help staff get comfortable with technology in an easy-going, informal setting. It’s a lunch-time series, so staff can bring food and eat and converse while learning something new. I see it as a continuation of the Learning 2.0 program we did last year. Today, I presented some of the Best of Websites of 2008, 28 websites in about 55 minutes. Here are my slides for anyone who’s interested.

It’s not too early to start thinking about getting involved with the PLA 2010 Conference in Portland, Oregon! The website for the next PLA National Conference is now up and people can submit program proposals online.

The Public Library Association (PLA) is now planning the 2010 PLA National Conference, which will be held in Portland, Oregon, March 23-27, 2010. The most important part of that planning is assembling the slate of preconferences and the 100+ concurrent program sessions that will be presented during the conference. The deadline for submitting all proposals is November 30, 2008.

I’m fortunate enough to be on the program planning sub-committee for this conference so I’m really looking forward to all the preparation that goes into a conference this big. I’ve been to two PLA conferences so far (Boston and Minneapolis) and both were great learning experiences. I think the focus on public libraries really helps and there always seems to be multiple sessions I’m interested in attending at any given time slot. Hopefully that’s the case with Portland as well! So, start sending those proposals!

I know there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of readers out there who are just dying to hear about how my career is progressing, so this post is for all of you ! Seriously, though, this past month has been full of interesting developments for me professionally.

First, I received a promotion to supervisor of adult technology assistants at MPOW. I’ve been at my library for just under a year now, so I’m grateful that my director and supervisor have enough faith in me to promote me already. I’ll be supervising a great group who do all they can to assist people using the adult services public computers. It’ll be interesting early on because we’ll be hiring three new assistants in the next few weeks. I guess there’s no better way to learn supervisory and management skills than to actually be hiring, training, and supervising new employees almost immediately! I’m actually very fortunate because the person who had the position before me had time to meet with me and give me a lot of great training. Thanks, Jenn, and good luck in England!

The second thing that has happened is I’ve started a part-time position with Oakton Community College’s library. I’ll be helping the library explore web 2.0 technologies and it’s all starting with a summer learning 2.0 program called Library 2.Oakton (get it!? two point o-akton!). It’s great because I can use my experience helping set up the 10 Things @ SPL program, but I get to tweak things a bit to fit the academic library world. The program just started this week and already we have some faculty and staff really getting the hang of blogging. Hi, OCC folk!

Btw, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library just launched their learning 2.0 program, Baker’s Dozen, for the public! Good stuff!
